Bulletproof Matcha Recipe
Have you heard of Bulletproof Coffee? This trend isn’t really new – the original recipe was created and posted online by David Asprey in 2009 — but it continues to show up in coffee shops, health food stores, and the blogs of people following Paleo or Ketogenic diets.
The original recipe called for butter made from the milk of grass-fed cows and Medium-Chain Triglyceride (MCT) oil, and the inventor recommended drinking it as a replacement for breakfast. He claimed that the Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and nutrients in the butter and the MCT provided improved mental clarity and promoted weight loss.
Personally, my overall nutrition philosophy is moderation — skipping meals doesn’t appeal to me at all! I try to balance complex carbs with some protein and fat to avoid blood sugar spikes, but I’m not a good candidate for the Keto Diet, or Intermittent Fasting, or really any plan that requires cutting out whole food groups or re-learning how to cook. That being said, I’ve been curious and wondered what all the fuss is about? I was most interested in seeing if anyone had tried to make a Bulletproof Matcha!
Of course, the idea of mixing clarified butter or other fats into hot tea is not a new one. Yak-butter tea has been the morning drink of the people of the Himalayan Mountains for centuries. (David Asprey came up with his Bulletproof Coffee idea after a trek in Nepal, after all…) My research turned up several different recipes for "Bulletproof" Matcha drinks, some more appealing than others. I opted for a version that relies on coconut oil to provide the medium-chain triglycerides, rather than springing for the special MCT oil, and didn’t include any additional sweeteners or flavorings. You could add a bit of honey or stevia, if you like it sweeter, or substitute coconut or almond milk for the water to make an even more luxurious drink.
Bulletproof Matcha is a rich and creamy blend that combines the energizing benefits of matcha with the sustaining power of healthy fats. This modern twist on the traditional matcha latte is designed to keep you focused and satisfied, providing a smooth, long-lasting energy boost without the jitters. Perfect for busy mornings or as a pre-workout drink, Bulletproof Matcha offers a delicious way to fuel your body and mind, helping you power through your day with clarity and calm.
If you’ve never tried butter tea or 'bulletproof' drinks, I recommend starting with less coconut oil and butter, and adding more to taste. So – what do you think? Give it a try and let me know!
